Breaking Bread Together

I arrived in Korea on September 3, 2001. After two years of staying here, I still couldn’t find any work for me to do except visiting the Filipinos in Ansan and celebrating Mass with them once a month. That was not enough to convince me to stay in Korea. I felt then that the Korea Church had no work for me, until I read the book, Breaking Bread Together. Breaking Bread Together was written by Fr. Eugene Docoy, Jr., SVD. Sharing lives with the migrant workers inspired him to write this book. This book, fortunately, inspired me to stay in Korea to experience living with the migrant workers and breaking bread with them.Fr. Eugene started Galilea in 1997 with a petty budget and loving help from friends and benefactors. The only place they could afford was a basement of an apartment in front of Wongok Church. It was a very simple office but has become the symbol of the community’s unity and cooperation.

The Ansan Filipino Community started in 1992. The AFC has blessed with very fine leaders. So, it became the backbone of Galilea. The first president of the community, Ben Magundayao, was given the Stephen Cardinal Kim Award for his dedication to serve his fellow migrant workers. There are so many things to be grateful of and to celebrate. The most important of all is that, we should be grateful of the presence of Jesus in our community. He never left our community because if He did, we will not be celebrating the 15th year anniversary of AFC and the 10th year anniversary of Galilea.

We thank God for all the blessings we have received. We thank God for the joy we have had for each other’s love in the community. We thank God for the helping people He has given us. We thank God also for the problems and trials that crossed our path, for these are the means given us to come closer to our Savior each day, for if we suffer with Him we shall also share His glory (Rom. 8:29).

Let’s continue breaking bread together because we are one with Jesus everytime we celebrate the Holy Eucharist. Let’s celebrate because there are so many reasons to celebrate!HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!
